Prescription Drug Plans

If you choose original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage, and you want prescription drug coverage, you must choose and join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. You usually pay a monthly premium.

These plans are run by private companies approved by Medicare.

Medicare Supplements

A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy, sold by private companies, can help pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medigap policy pays its share.

Every Medigap policy must follow federal and state laws designed to protect you, and they must be clearly identified as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” Insurance companies can sell you only a “standardized” policy identified in most states by letters A through D, F through G, and K through N. All policies offer the same basic benefits, but some offer additional benefits so you can choose which one meets your needs. In Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, Medigap policies are standardized in a different way.

Medicare Advantage Plans

A Medicare Advantage Plan also known as "Medicare Part C" or an "MA Plan" is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS), Special Needs Plans (SNP), and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans.

If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still have Medicare. Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren't paid for under Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans cover all Medicare Services. Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer extra coverage. Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer prescription drug coverage.
